This is my initial attempt at using Bubbl.us to create a mindmap about Week 1.
It could go on for ever, but definitely a great tool to use with kids in the classroom.
This subject is tying in nicely with the English Assessment 1 on Visual Literacy, in particular visual images.

So what is it about mindmapping that makes it so effective with many learners. According to and article on the "Teaching Expertise" website:

Mind Mapping uses the whole brain to help generate ideas. The cerebral cortex (cerebrum) of our brain, or 'thinking cap' as it is sometimes called, consists of a left and right side. The left side of the brain mainly focuses on words, logic, lists, analysis and numbers, whereas the right side of our brain focuses on such areas as rhythm, imagination, colour, images, dimension and day dreaming.

The brain functions by connecting between right and left brain, linking and associating, which is where Mind Mapping becomes so exciting. By using colour, images and key words within a Mind Map,we are in effect using both sides of the brain to enhance our learning, creativity and clarify our thinking.

Mind Mapping is a tool that is likely to appeal to visual learners, and whilst their effect with other learners may not be as great, it is unlikely that their use would be detrimental with any learners. If as learning managers we are indeed attempting to go beyond the "one style fits all" classrooms of the past then the inclusion and explicit teaching of such tools is a necessity.
